The Revd Canon Matthias Der
Dean-designate of St John’s Cathedral
The Revd Canon Matthias Der was raised in Hong Kong and Taiwan and educated in the United States and Canada, where he has lived for the past 27-years. During this time, Canon Matthias gained much experience in different cultures, languages and ministerial settings.
Canon Matthias’ 22 years priestly ministry are marked with nurturing Christian discipleship, sharing the gospel, and making it relevant to everyday life. Currently, he is the parish priest of St Christopher’s Anglican Church in the Diocese of Toronto. During his incumbency, St Christopher’s has grown from a humble church plant to a vibrant parish operating from two locations.
Canon Matthias has served on many major committees in the Toronto Diocese, sat on the Board of Trustees of a seminary, and was elected to both the Provincial Synod of Ontario and the General Synod of Canada. He was made an Honorary Canon of St James’ Cathedral, Toronto in 2007.
Canon Matthias is married to Rachel and has two teenage daughters. Matthias hopes to be with us in late July.
With excitement and deep trust in God, Canon Matthias looks forward to sharing Christ’s ministry with the people of St John’s Cathedral in furthering God’s kingdom.
