The Revd Will Newman

The Revd Will Newman is a Chaplain at St John’s Cathedral with special responsibility for Nurture courses, programmes and events to help people grow in faith.

Will is also Priest-in-charge of St Stephen’s Chapel Stanley, a daughter church of the Cathedral. In addition he’s also Chaplain at Stanley Prison, Hong Kong’s big high-security prison, and Chaplain of St Stephen’s College. Each week he’s in contact with students, teachers, prisoners, parishioners and newcomers to Christianity. Will frequently broadcasts religious and spiritual talks on Hong Kong Radio 4, and is active in interfaith work with the Hong Kong Network for Religion and Peace.

Will trained for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge, and came to Hong Kong in 2004 after serving as curate at St Andrew’s Halstead in Chelmsford Diocese.

Before ordination Will worked with VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) in the 1980s and 90s, first as an English Teacher in China, then in London as a recruiter and trainer of teachers, and then in the VSO China Office, supporting volunteers and developing the VSO China programme.

Will is married to Dot, a trained artist who writes and illustrates children’s books. Their two sons Robin and Francis are both studying in the UK.

Will enjoys singing with the Cecilian Singers (and occasionally with the Cathedral Choir), classical music concerts, Royal Geographical Society talks, swimming, and walking in Tai Tam Country Park with Alphi, a beagle.
